Tongue in Chic featuring David J. Vocal Pugilist and Local Star Danni Antagonist
10th January 2010 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
* HEADLINE ACT IS DAVID J. VOCAL PUGILIST * COME AND CELEBRATE OUR FIRST BIRTHDAY!
* LAUNCH OF YEARBOOK ANTHOLOGY
Described by master versifier John Hegley as “a very special poetry Sunday”, Tongue in Chic celebrate their first birthday with an exceptional Spoken Word performer: David J on Sunday 10 January at MADCAP.
In a barnstorming first year, Tongue in Chic has gone from pipe dream to permanent fixture on the Poetry and Spoken Word circuit earning plaudits from audience and guest performers alike including:
“pound for pound, the best poetry/spoken word event on the Midlands circuit!”
It has been a first that exceeded expectations for Mark Niel, the organiser behind Tongue in Chic:
“I can’t believe how well the first year has gone; excellent shows and guests but more than that, I’m really pleased about the on local writers and performers. We have started to make an impact on the national scene, winning competitions and commissions and seeing our artists reach National Slam Finals and begin to alter perceptions about Milton Keynes.
JANUARY’S HEADLINE GUESTS
The new season kicks off with David J. – vocal pugilist. David’s performances at Latitude and Glastonbury have made him a legend on the poetry circuit.
David won the Choice FM Battle Rap Competition back in 1992 and his unique style of delivery is heavily influenced by his hip-hop origins. David J has been described as a verbal gymnast. Using powerful verbal trickery his words seem to go forwards then flip backwards. At other times it’s like he’s scratching words instead of vinyl and it often appears there is more than one person speaking onstage.
David’s appearance at Tongue in Chic is part of his warm up for a tour of the US later in 2010.
LOCAL FEATURED PERFORMER this month is Danni Antagonist. Since dipping her toes in the water of performance poetry in London in 2005, Danni has performed in Milton Keynes and beyond. Danni combines driving rhythms and rhymes with uncompromising words to produce poetry with a unique urban edge. Danni won one of the Open Mic sessions at the prestigious London-based gig “Bang said the Gun”
