Sunday Night Lives

9th June 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Its Sunday Night Lives second anniversary at the Flying Pig and celebrating this with me will be Neil Graham, Rebecca Cooney, False Colours, Fay Roberts and Afrika Simpson.
Neil Graham (@agniharlem_imlac) is a Scottish singer-songwriter influenced by all manner of roots music; blues, folk, Americana, amongst a plethora of other styles. He began songwriting as a wee boy, singing nonsense to the rhythm of the washing machine. His songs range from the romantic to the tragic, to the sometimes comic, and his guitar skills echo the twangs of the likes of Davy Graham and John Martyn. You can hear that Glasgow rasp in his voice too! A must see of up and coming songwriters.

Fay Roberts is a peripatetic, percussive performance poet by night, and a professional projector by day. Fay runs the Cambridge branch of the Hammer & Tongue slam series, their own poetry label Allographic (which functions as a small press and a platform for performers), is manager of the Wild Strawberries Stage at Strawberry Fair and Poetry Blogger for Poetry and Words at Glastonbury Festival 2019 and is also incredibly modest about how wonderful their poetry is.

False Colours are an electro-acoustic folk duo consisting of David on the lesser seen electric tenor guitar and Polly on the bass (both on vocals with harmonies galore!). Hailing from Sudbury in Suffolk, their music is an original mix of traditional folk style, rough and ready punk/indie and catchy pop. Consistently described as “unique,” they’ve only been playing together since April 2018, but are proud to say that they have already succeeded in achieving some of their goals – highlights including being played on BBC Radio, doing a live session for BBC Introducing in Suffolk (where presenter Angelle said False Colours song ‘Make Yourself a Sandwich’ was her song of the year for 2018!), being invited to perform on the Soapbox Stage at FolkEast festival (where they also sold out of their pre-release EPs!), achieving a number one in the Cambridge 105 Radio Unsigned Chart, and of course recording their first EP (scroll up to listen!). They are keen to get their music heard and are confident that it will go down well with any folk lovers amongst others! Have a listen and let them know what you think.

Rebecca Cooney is a spoken word poet whose work explores themes of feminism, fairytales, home, immigration, mental health and racism.
She is is the Cambridge regional Hammer and Tongue slam runner-up champion for 2018, and has won a number of slams across London. Her work has been published on the feminist collective website Dear Damsels, included in their 2019 annual, and in the Spoken Word London Anti-Hate Anthology.
In her other life she is a journalist.
Expect shape-shifting women, dementia wolves and beard appreciation.

Afrika is a singer-songwriter living in Cambridge. With a passion for delving into the inner and outer worlds, and many a metaphor up her sleeve, she brings forth a sip of music from an unknown folkesque genre.
