Allographic: Open Mic featuring Paula Varjack and Mark Niel

27th October 2013 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Order tickets via Eventbrite: http://agomoctober13-efbevent.eventbrite.co.uk – on a pay-as-you like, donation basis…
So, what’s Other Voices then? It’s a simple concept really – a nice function room at the top of a pleasant pub; a stage, a microphone, a bunch of lovely people, and some words. And free snacks! Entry is a mere £5/ £3.50 for concessions and performers. Doors are at 7:30pm and the gig kicks off at 8pm.

So – come and show us what you’ve got: step up to the open mic or enjoy the talent on display (ideally both, of course!). Pretty much anything goes, as long as you respect the audience and the ethos of the night!

Our two features are performers right to the core:

Mark Niel is an award-winning Performance Poet. His philosophy that poetry can be entertainment as well as art has seen him perform everywhere from mainstream theatres to pubs, festivals, libraries, comedy clubs, schools, football stadiums and cruise ships. Mark was appointed as the first official Poet Laureate of Milton Keynes in 2011 and is the Poet in Residence for the MK Dons for the 2012/2013 season. Paula Varjack is a writer and performance maker. She has been making, performing and touring her work since 2008. She is particularly interested in true stories, and is often intrigued by the unsaid, the unspoken subtext that lingers underneath and between what we say. Her work has taken shape in a variety of forms; spoken word, devised performance, short fiction, documentaries and sound design. She has performed across the UK and in the U.S., Germany, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Spain and France. Find out more at http://www.paulavarjack.com

And we’re chuffed to announce that Mark will be offering a poetry workshop on performance at 3pm the same day – “Turning words into performance”, a practical session for all poets whether page or stage based. Details and links to follow.

We’ll be recording the night for future podcasts and CDs, and we’ll be showing off our latest pamphlets and other poetry collections, along with the latest issue of Small Word, a poetry-short-story-photography-artwork magazine of petite loveliness that we launched in Cambridge in 2011.
