Allographic Workshop: “Performance Techniques” with Fay Roberts

22nd February 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Allographic has three forms of live event – “Other Voices”, open mic with featured guests every 4th Sunday of the month; “Allographic presents…”, a loose series of events with bigger names from the spoken word scene, and a burgeoning set of workshops for aspirant poets, storytellers, and other writers and performers.
Attendees of the workshop should consider putting their new-found skills into practice at our evening event. Find out more at https://www.facebook.com/events/903055793068650

“Performance Techniques” – a practical workshop with Fay Roberts (free entry; donations welcome)

Explore simple but effective techniques that will aid confidence getting your words from page to stage. Are you a writer who is nervous about reading aloud? Someone who would like to improve stage craft or microphone technique? Want to discuss how to memorise your pieces or just engage with the audience?

This is a workshop for you to take the words from off the page and inside your head to the ears and eyes of audiences.

You will need yourself, and willingness to move around.

No of spaces: 12

Suitable for ages: 16+

Materials: bring a poem or story that you have finished and would like to work on performing aloud.

Fay Roberts is a peripatetic percussive performance poet by night and a professional projector by day. She runs the Cambridge branch of the Hammer & Tongue slam series, and her own poetry label Allographic (which functions as a small press and a platform for performers), along with co-directing the Spoken Word section of The Free Fringe in Edinburgh. In 2014, she “won” the Edinburgh Fringe Anti-Slam (where the worst poem and performance with the lowest points wins a terrible prize).

She has been performing since 1979 in a variety of guises, but first and foremost as a singer and musician. She has been performing poetry since 2006, and hosting events since 2007. Fay has performed poetry in: pubs, clubs, concert halls, theatres, museums, tents, shopping centres, and stately gardens; in open mic, showcases, features, support, collaboration, chorus, competition, and costume. Sometimes she bangs a drum, and sometimes she performs in silence, while the words flutter in front of her…
