Spoken word artistry and competitive mayhem. What more could you want?
Our Regional Final is upon us (huzzah!), and this is your chance to enjoy the talent of our 2012-2013 season finalists!
Entry: £5/ £3.50 conc. (which is frankly a mad set of prices for this kind of talent!) in advance; £6.50/ £5 on the door (which is still a bit mad, really!). Doors at 7:30pm for 8pm kick-off
This is your chance to be there for the apex of the spoken word slam brilliance that has graced this here fair city this season, in the warm and wonderful surroundings of fabulous venue The Fountain.
Witness our seven talented finalists (details to follow) compete for a place in the National Final! And enjoy some great beer…
Will Brown – won the October 2012 slam – entirely to his own surprise! – when this Hammer & Tongue first-timer decided to throw caution to the wind and climb up to the mic with his pugilistic rhythms at the last minute.
Riaz Moola – spits rhyming tales about samurais, unemployment and the ocean. Riaz won the December 2012 slam – winding a series of impassioned, intricate rhymes into a Hemingway-worthy story of revenge. http://riazm.tumblr.com/
Leanne Moden – is a performance poet, and the current Fenland Poet Laureate. Leanne won the January 2013 slam – bringing her deceptively innocent delivery of chortle-provoking poetry back to the keen ears of the Hammer & Tongue audience. http://tenyearstime.blogspot.co.uk/
Justina Kehinde… Second of twins, youngest of eight, passionate about Justice and the world’s social state. Justina blew the audience away at the February 2013 slam with a no-holds-barred, penetrative examination of a shocking topic. http://deathofthewriter.wordpress.com
Tess Gardener’s poems are like a nice cuddle… with razorblades. Despite the potential distraction of roadworks in the background, Colchester Tess’s impassioned and uncompromisingly feminist poetry won the March 2013 slam handily. http:/tessgardenerpoet.wordpress.com/
Aryn Clark – writes intense and personal poetry, striving to combine visceral energy with emotional authenticity. Welsh-born, Colchester-based Aryn won the April 2013 slam with his deceptively gentle voice and words building to a terrifyingly vitriolic crescendo. http://www.skopt.co.uk
Antosh Wojcik – won the June 2013 slam with skilful rhythms and playful delivery winning the hearts and minds of judges and audience alike.
And to soothe you between the fevered rounds of competition we have our lovely featured act HOLLIE MCNISH: an internationally-renowned poet who has appeared on stages from tiny Cambridge pub rooms to Glastonbury Festival to a tour of Australia.
Her poetry influences span hip-hop, grime, and sixties protest songs, while her lyrics themselves span at least five languages. As well as performing her gorgeous poetry all over the country and running workshops and poetry demonstrations with not-for-profit organisation “Page to Performance”, she has played with drum ’n’ bass acts like Beardyman and Jungle Drummer, and was named a Great Briton in 2010!
Check out her work on http://www.holliemcnish.com/
Hosted by Fay “Edinburgh Survivor” Roberts.
