Scribal Gathering Spoken Word Special

25th January 2011 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Celebrating Stony Stratford’s annual literary festival Stony Words!
There will be the usual open-minded open mic, plus special guest performer Justin Thyme.

As the focus is on words rather than music, there will be no instruments allowed on the open mic this time – voices only. However, all performers are still welcome to read a favourite poem or piece, recite song lyrics, sing a capella or share a suitable quotation.

The Bardic Trials – the quest to elect the Bard of Stony Stratford!

The position will be officially recognised by the town council, and the successful Bard will preside over future community events and represent the spirit of creativity in the town.

Anyone can take part – poet, musician, singer, songwriter or public speaker – anyone who has a voice and knows how to use it is welcome.

It will be a competitive performance of three rounds. For this, musical instruments ARE permitted, so come along prepared to perform and see if you could be the Bard of Stony Stratford.

In February 2010, four residents of Stony Stratford – Jonathan Taylor, Richard Williams, Paul Stephenson and Richard Frost – launched a monthly Open Mic Music and Poetry event called Scribal Gathering, taking place on the second Tuesday of every month in the Stables Bar, behind The Bull Hotel.

This was in direct response to what they felt was needed within the town: an open session dedicated to celebrating creativity in all forms and welcoming performers of any style, genre, ability or experience to share their talent before a supportive audience.

This met with unprecedented success. With regular attendances of between sixty and eighty people each month, featuring performances from regionally acclaimed poets and musicians alongside emerging new talent, Scribal Gathering has become a recognised fixture on the local live performance scene. To continue supporting and promoting the local culture of creativity, Scribal Gathering proposes to appoint a Town Bard – The Bard of Stony Stratford.

The Bard of Stony Stratford will have an officially recognised status in the community. This new role is positively supported by Stony Stratford Town Council, who will work in partnership with The Bard to share information about forthcoming town events.

The Bard will be actively involved in promoting the creative efforts and achievements of the community, composing and performing original pieces to celebrate local activity and making special guest appearances at various events and festivals in the town.

Scribal Gathering is seeking aspiring Bards. Anyone can apply to be the Town Bard: public speakers, poets, singers, songwriters, story-tellers and musicians are all welcome – traditionally, a Bard could be all of these things and more. Anyone who has a voice and knows how to use it will be eligible.

The Bard will be appointed through a selection process, taking place at a special Scribal Gathering on Tuesday 25th January 2011, as part of the Stony Words festival. All applicants will perform before a panel of judges and a live audience, who will vote to choose the most suitable candidate.

The successful Bard will hold the position for a year and a day. This will be an officially recognised position. A new replacement will be appointed each year.
